What to Expect on Roof Replacement Day: A Homeowner's Timeline

By Lakeview Roofing & Restoration 7 min read

Getting a new roof is a big deal. It's noisy, there are strangers on your property, and you want to know what's happening and when. This guide walks you through a typical roof replacement day — from the moment the crew arrives to the final cleanup — so there are no surprises.

Most residential roof replacements in North Idaho take 1-3 days depending on size, complexity, and weather. Here's what each stage looks like.

Before the Crew Arrives

A little preparation the night before makes the whole process smoother:

  • Move vehicles out of the driveway. The crew needs space for the dumpster, material delivery, and access around the house. Park on the street or at a neighbor's.
  • Clear the perimeter. Move patio furniture, grills, potted plants, and anything else away from the house. Debris falls — we tarp and protect, but clearing the area is your best insurance.
  • Protect attic items. Dust and small debris can fall through the decking during tear-off. If you have stored items in the attic, cover them with tarps or old sheets.
  • Secure pets. The noise, strangers, and activity can stress animals out. Keep dogs inside, and consider arranging for them to be elsewhere if they're noise-sensitive. Cats should stay indoors.
  • Inform your neighbors. A heads-up is courteous. Roof replacement is loud, and your neighbors will appreciate the warning — especially in tighter neighborhoods around Coeur d'Alene or Post Falls.
  • Take photos of your property. Snap a few pictures of landscaping, siding, and the general condition of your yard. This is just good practice before any major work on your home.

Arrival and Setup (7:00 – 8:00 AM)

The crew typically arrives between 7 and 8 AM. The first 30-60 minutes is all setup:

  • Dumpster placement. Positioned for easy debris disposal without blocking your access.
  • Tarp protection. Tarps go down around the entire perimeter of the house to catch debris and protect your siding, windows, and landscaping.
  • Material staging. Shingles, underlayment, flashing, and accessories are staged on the roof or near the work area.
  • Safety setup. Roof jacks, safety harnesses, and fall protection equipment go up before anyone walks the roof.

Tear-Off (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM)

This is the noisiest part of the day. The crew removes all existing roofing materials down to the bare deck. Expect:

  • Constant scraping, pulling, and banging sounds
  • Debris sliding down tarps into the dumpster
  • Frequent trips up and down ladders

During tear-off, we inspect the exposed deck for rot, water damage, or structural issues. If we find problems — and in North Idaho, where ice dams and moisture are common, we often do — we'll show you and discuss repair costs before proceeding. No surprises on your final bill.

Deck Repair (If Needed)

If the deck has rotted plywood, damaged OSB, or soft spots, we replace those sections before moving forward. This is critical — your new roof is only as good as what's underneath it. Deck repair might add an hour or two to the timeline, depending on how much needs replacing.

Underlayment and Ice Shield (Late Morning)

Before shingles go on, we install:

  • Ice and water shield at all eaves, valleys, and penetrations. This self-adhering membrane is your last line of defense against ice dams — essential in North Idaho.
  • Synthetic underlayment over the rest of the deck. This replaces old felt paper and provides a much better moisture barrier.
  • Drip edge along all eaves and rakes to direct water away from the fascia.

Shingle or Metal Installation (Midday – Late Afternoon)

This is where you start to see your new roof take shape. The crew works from the bottom up, installing:

  • Starter strip shingles along the eaves
  • Field shingles in a staggered pattern (for asphalt) or panels (for standing seam metal)
  • Step flashing at walls and dormers
  • Counter-flashing around chimneys
  • Pipe boots and vent covers
  • Ridge caps along the peak

For most homes in Kootenai County, this phase takes the bulk of Day 1 and part of Day 2 for larger or more complex roofs.

Cleanup and Final Inspection

After the last ridge cap is nailed, the crew does a thorough cleanup:

  • Magnetic nail sweep. A powerful magnet on wheels is rolled across your entire yard, driveway, and walkways. We typically pick up dozens of stray nails. This is critical for your tires, your kids, and your pets.
  • Debris removal. All tarps are pulled, collected, and loaded into the dumpster. The dumpster is removed within 1-2 days.
  • Gutter check. We verify gutters are clear of debris and flowing properly.
  • Final walkthrough. The crew lead inspects the entire roof from the ground and checks all flashings, penetrations, and ridge caps.

We also walk the property with you (or leave detailed notes) to make sure everything meets your expectations.

What If It Rains Mid-Project?

North Idaho weather is unpredictable. If rain (or snow) threatens mid-project, the crew immediately tarp all exposed areas. Professional roofers monitor weather constantly and plan accordingly. Your home will not be left exposed to the elements overnight.

For multi-day projects, we tarp everything at the end of each work day — no exceptions. We've replaced hundreds of roofs in Rathdrum, Hayden, and across Kootenai County through every season, and weather delays happen. We communicate clearly and reschedule promptly.

Can You Stay Home?

Absolutely. Many homeowners stay home during the project. Just know what you're getting into:

  • The noise is significant — constant hammering, scraping, and walking above you
  • Phone calls and video meetings will be difficult during tear-off and installation
  • The crew works outside; they won't need access to your home's interior (unless there's interior damage to address)
  • Some homeowners choose to work from a coffee shop or run errands during the loudest phases
